Collapse zone is a safety buffer around a burning or compromised building that accounts for how far debris could travel if the structure collapses. The standard distance used is 1.5 times the building’s height, giving enough room for unpredictable debris as the collapse occurs. For example, a building 60 feet tall would have a collapse zone of about 90 feet. The other options are too small or not aligned with the usual safety guideline: 0.5 times height would underprotect, 1 time height isn’t enough margin, and 2 times height is more conservative than the standard definition.
